2012 Oscar Nominees - The Artist

The Artist is a 2011 French comedy-drama film directed by Michel Hazanavicius, starring Jean Dujardin and Bérénice Bejo. Packaged as a silent, black-and-white 1920s melodrama, the film provides audiences a powerful filmgoing experience that works on many levels. 'The Artist' surpassed the $20 million mark at the box office weekend. “The Artist” is the film’s format and the way French Director Michel Hazanavicius uses it as a tool to forward the narrative. Valentin’s response is not far off from that of many real-life silent era stars, some whose careers didn’t stay alive this monumental change in moviemaking.

The film was nominated for six Golden Globes, the most of any film from 2011, and won three; Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, Best Original Score, and Best Actor - Motion Picture Musical or Comedy (Dujardin). In January 2012 the film was nominated for twelve BAFTAs and ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for Hazanavicius, Best Actor in a Leading Role for Dujardin, and Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Bejo. In France, it has been nominated for ten César Awards, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Original Screenplay.

Outside a movie premier, enthusiastic fan Peppy Miller literally bumps into the swashbuckling hero of the silent film, George Valentin. The star reacts graciously and Peppy plants a kiss on his cheek as they are surrounded by photographers. The headlines demand: "Who's That Girl?" and Peppy is inspired to audition for a dancing bit-part at the studio. However as Peppy slowly rises through the industry, the introduction of talking-pictures turns Valentin's world upside-down.

War Horse - Oscar Nominations 2012

War Horse is a 2011 war epic motion picture directed by Steven Spielberg. It is based on both War Horse, a children's novel set before and during World War I, by British author Michael Morpurgo, first published in the United Kingdom in 1982, and the 2007 stage adaptation of the same name. The film is currently in contention for six Academy Awards and five BAFTAs. It was also nominated for two Golden Globe Awards. War Horse is scheduled to be released on DVD and Blu-ray in April 2012.

The world’s most successful filmmaker likes to work in couplets, making two films in a given year, a fluffy one and a serious one (it began with his one-two punch in 1993: Jurassic Park, which transformed the special-effects industry, and Schindler’s List, which won him an Oscar); War Horse is the sober-minded yang to Tintin’s carefree yin – but a ‘serious’ Spielberg film works within certain parameters. War Horse is a good film, but it lacks an organising principle – or, more accurately, it vacillates between three organising principles.

The film has received generally positive reviews from critics. The first unofficial reviews by bloggers started appearing online the day of the first preview screening, 1 November 2011, with a review appearing on Ain't It Cool News on 3 November.Although there was an embargo on official reviews of the film being published before 21 December 2011.
